The Upper School Winter Concert

February 15, 2019

Recently, on January 28th the Upper School Chorus and Orchestra performed in what is one of the most exciting events of the year: the Winter Concert. Every year XIs and XIIs participating in either Chorus or Orchestra perform for their families and peers the arrangements they’ve been working on during school hours. In past years, choristers, in particular, have wanted to sing more contemporary or well-known music.

Emilia Fusaro, XIsD, expressed feeling a similar way. “I enjoy when we sing songs in English and when we sing songs we know, so we can better understand the song and it’s more enjoyable.”

From the audience’s point of view, it appeared as though these requests had been fulfilled since the Chorus performed modern favorites such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Keane’s “Somewhere Only We Know.”

When asked what their favorite songs in the choral repertoire were, almost every interviewed student replied with “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

“I like ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ the best because there are so many changes in the tempo, and overall it’s a really fun song,” said Ernesto Bautista, XIsD.      Aside from the Chorus, the Orchestra’s portion was also filled with impressive songs such a Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” and Joseph Brackett’s “Simple Gifts.”

While the Orchestra performed slightly less music than the Chorus, students agreed that they felt like they put a lot of time and effort into their few songs and they felt confident in what they performed.

Aside from the repertoire, this year C&C introduced two new teachers for the Upper School Orchestra, Roslyn Willis and Daniel Tortoledo. While the introduction of two new teachers might have caused uncertainty and confusion, Penelope Clark and Davin Grabel, XIIsS, both agreed, “Roslyn did a really good job at directing everyone and keeping everything under control especially since the Orchestra is a lot bigger this year. Daniel did a good job at tuning all of the instruments because there were so many string instruments. I think they make a good pair.”

Overall the Winter Concert was an event to remember bringing together 64 Upper School students to make music together and to show their friends and family all the hard work they had put into Chorus and Orchestra this year.
