Trump Shuts Down the Government

President Trump walked out of a White House meeting on Wednesday after Nancy Pelosi, representative of California, very clearly stated that she will not fund the border wall. Trump even said he will reopen the government, but Nancy refused. Trump’s want for the border has caused the government to be shut down for 19 days and counting. On January 9, 2019, Donald J. Trump had a meeting with the top congressional Democrats. Chuck Schumer, Senior United States Senator of NY, and Nancy Pelosi, representative of California’s 12th congressional district, accused Trump of being indifferent to all struggling federal workers he had made by shutting down the government. The three leaders tried to negotiate but ended up with no outcome. "Unfortunately, the President just got up and walked out," said Senator Chuck Schumer of New York. He asked Nancy Pelosi, “Will you agree to my wall?” She said no. Donald Trump decided to get up and say, “Then we have nothing to discuss,” and he just walked out. As we see again, a “temper tantrum” was thrown because Mr. Trump could not get his way, and he just walked out of the meeting." On the 9th of January, Donald Trump posted on Twitter, "Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!" Trump said. We clearly notice that Donald Trump’s idea of the wall is something he is sticking with, knowing that other officials do not agree. Since the government is shut down, many things have been affected by this. Now on the weekends, the NJ transit is not a train, but a ferry. People who work at national parks, monuments and museums would be told to go home. Other people like the Postal Service, the TSA, and Air Traffic Control will not be affected. Another instance when the government was shut down was in 2013. According to some statistics, roughly 850,000 employees were laid off over a span of 5-6 days, according to the Office of Management and Budget. Lilly Meyer, XIIIs, said, “The other day I was discussing the government shut down with my mother and I did not agree with Donald Trump’s reasoning. He shut down the government, causing much unemployment just so he could get Nancy to fund him. I have not liked Trump very much, but his current behavior is disgusting.” Another student, Gitana Savage, XIIIs, said “While I understand that building the wall is one of Donald Trump’s biggest goals it’s ridiculous to hold people’s paychecks just because he can’t agree on where to place the government money. There are people living paycheck to paycheck and when they don’t get paid they won’t be able to pay rent or feed themselves. Even though Trump has other plans for his financial resources it is his job as president of the United States to do what’s best for the people and right now Trump is being selfish and cutting off people’s resources because he is being stubborn and refuses to think about anyone other than himself.” As Gitana Savage explained, Trump’s reasoning for shutting down the government is, in Trump’s eye, an easier to get funding in order to benefit Americans, but can also be interpreted as selfish. He is costing many civilians their jobs and financial livings because Mr. Trump to keep America safe from any harmful people and is his way, we stop that from happening is by building the Mexican Wall. As 60% of Americans disagree with Donald Trump’s decision, 40% do. Rationally speaking, Trump’s intentions are correct in how he wants to keep the U.S.A in safe hands, but only the U.S.A. He wants to shut out Mexico, thinking of them as a threat.
