On November 9th of 2018, Illumination’s The Grinch hit theaters. The production was based on the classic story, How The Grinch Stole Christmas by Dr. Seuss. The movie begins in Whoville, where enthusiasm flourished throughout the town since the holidays were just around the corner. Songs were sung, decorations were put up and festive stores opened. The whole town was thrilled for Christmas, except for the Grinch, voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, who lives in the isolated Northern part of Whoville. Due to his lonely past in the orphanage, the Grinch developed a loathing for the Christmas celebration. He invented an ingenious plan to ruin Christmas, but along the way, he learned an important lesson and met someone who showed him what Christmas is truly is about.
The movie is filled with comedy and heartfelt moments, but there has been a large amount of controversial feedback. Some people argue that it is not as good as past versions or is just not worth the time. In fact, it has received only 56 rotten tomatoes a few weeks after it came out.
“It will never beat the legendary Jim Carrey version of The Grinch,” said Felix Gaddie, XIIIs.
“I think it looks nice visually, but I don't see how it really needs to exist as a movie,” said Roly Levy, XIIIs.
Both Felix and Roly have not seen the 2018 animated movie but have gathered their opinions based on the trailer.
On the other hand, The Grinch has engaged younger audiences. Its comedic animation and amusing language has been a good ticket seller to many families with younger children. The relationship between the Grinch and his dog, Max, is also appealing to viewers due to the love and humor they share. Younger generations find the animation to be playful and fun to watch, despite what older audiences believe.
“I think it looks good. It is a classic movie that was made more modern,” said Cade Stow, XIIIs.
“It looks good, funny, and I loved the old Grinch movie,” said Bella Pincus, XIIsP, after she viewed the trailer.
Although the movie came out in November, it is the perfect film to watch in December to get into the holiday spirit. In fact, this family-friendly production may be the perfect movie to watch with your family for winter. After watching this comedy, not only will you laugh, but you will also realize what the true meaning of Christmas is.
